In my desire to be a more informed citizen, I spent some time last week listening to news radio. After a few hours of hearing about all the scary things going on in the world, I had to switch the dial to a station playing worship music to restore my peace. I needed that to remind myself that even though evil appears to be having its way, God is still in control.
There are countless atrocities and tragedies happening every day, and I am outraged and saddened by all the suffering and injustice. Yet, I am confident of this one thing . . . God is good all the time. He is perfectly loving, and since justice is part of love, he will not let evil go unchecked.
God is not wringing his hands over what to do about the current state of affairs on our spinning rock. He has a plan, and everything is falling into place perfectly. There will be justice; there will be redemption; and there will come a day when there will be no more sorrow, no more pain, and no more tears.
Until that day, I am not going to waiver in my commitment to keep up with local, national and world events, but neither am I going to let the news rob me of my peace. Instead, I am going to let it remind me that you never know what tomorrow may bring. It would be naive to assume tomorrow will be just like today.
Things are changing in this world and things will continue to change. Yet, when our future, or the future of our country, seems uncertain, we need not be afraid. God is in control of the outcome, and we can rest in that certainty amidst all the other uncertainties.
It is when we live in that state of profound confidence and peace that we are freed up to do the most important business of the day, each day and every day. We are freed up to love others and to love them well!
Let the peace of God rule in your hearts. ~ Colossians 3:15
