When I awoke this morning and saw that it was a beautifully sunny day, I made plans to enjoy the weather by walking to the store later. When later came, I almost talked myself out of it. I could easily have rationalized it, since I already get plenty of exercise riding my bicycle back and forth to work every day, but I didn’t want to disappoint myself. So, I carried through with my original intention and was so happy that I did!
Setting aside time to move can be a challenge, but I am always glad when I give myself the gift of exercise. There are people at work who call me hard-core since I ride my bicycle year ’round in any weather. People passing me in their cars on a rainy day may even feel sorry for me and wonder if a DUI is the reason I am pedaling to work.
But, the truth is, I love to be outside and I love physical exertion! Maybe part of it is that my old fashioned nature would prefer transporting myself instead of relying on a fuel-powered machine.
The wise among us will back me up. If you ask people in their 80’s and 90’s what advice they have for aging well, many of them say to never stop moving. They don’t mean the kind where you change your address often, although that can certainly be a workout. They mean the kind where you get up off the sofa and do something that requires movement.
This isn’t new news, of course, but it is easy to put it off when the day is busy or you just don’t feel like it or you are immersed in some other activity that you don’t want to stop. Yet, the reality is that if you don’t keep on moving, you won’t be able to keep on doing all the things that you enjoy! It makes perfect sense then, to… never stop moving!
